I made this etching thinking about small enclosed wildernesses. I grew up near a small Sussex town called Shoreham-by-Sea. Near the station was a small area fenced off with those tall silver spear-like railings. Inside it was a mass of sycamore trees and ivy, shifting shadows and damp cake of fallen leaves, a place with its own life that I felt could contain a sanctuary, a monster, a vision...in its setting of small dead end streets and grimy garage doors, murky industrial roof windows and bleared street lamps with the high arch of the South Downs stretching up into the darkening sky.
