Charcoal is immediate and raw, there is no stopping to load the brush with paint or deliberate over mixing the colour. This sense of pace allows me to work quickly and spontaneously. Undoubtably this pace means many mistakes will be made, but the mistakes become part of the history of the drawing and add to the depth and texture of the image.

Black and white creates the drama and monumentality that I am trying to capture for these botanical forms. 

I am amused by the idea of fragile living plants becoming bold and statuesque images, it is maybe an opportunity to encourage people to look more closely at the fabulous flora that is available to observe every day of the year!
