Collection: Robyn Neild : Sculptor : Folkestone
Robyn Neild’s bronzes depict a fluidity of movement and fragility of form in this traditionally heavy and static of materials. In her successful career as a fashion illustrator for world-renowned publications and brands such as Vogue, Liberty, Harvey Nichols and Harrods, Neild made full study of the dynamic potential for bodies and materials in motion.
Since re-locating to the coast and learning the techniques of bronze casting, Neild began to realise her ambitions of transforming her illustrations into sculpture. Through experimentation with natural materials, and the confidence to push the boundaries of what can be achieved through the “lost wax” casting technique, she has created forms of such intricacy and delicacy that the veins on petals, and even Neild’s own fingerprints can be perceived on the finished works.
Sculptures are modelled with wax, fabric, paper, and a variety of plant materials. No moulds are used, so each work is unique, with pauses and gaps alluding to the unpredictable spontaneity of all living forms. And within the structures, the visceral symbolism of thorns, fruit, and blossom breathe life into a deceptively still work, that imbues each setting with its brave energy.
