The popular Staffordshire Spaniels were colloquially known as Wally Dugs in Scotland. Pairs of the ceramic ornaments would be found on Victorian mantle pieces or windowsills throughout Britain, guarding the house. They were the quintessential status symbol of the time and are still a popular household collectible today.
I love their simplicity, their shape and the symmetry they create when placed together. They were hand painted, so each one is different and has its own look, often appearing startled or disapproving. I’m drawn towards them as their charm isn’t necessarily in their beauty. Lets be honest, they aren’t that pretty but there is something timeless and comforting about them.
