Brochwel was a 7th century Prince of Powys. He gave the young Saint Melangell a valley to build an abbey after he had been impressed by her courage in protecting a hare that had taken cover in her robes. I love this story because it offers so many opportunities for interpretation. Would a prince give a woman a valley, just because she hid a hare under her dress? Or does the hare represent something much more important, like a secret about him or an child? As an artist I weave truths with fiction to produce a narrative but I also like to unravel the narratives of others and readdress them through new representations.
