Collection: Jan Beeny : Ceramic Sculptor : Cardiff

I came to Wales in 1983 to study ceramics at Howard Gardens, Cardiff.  1988, I gained an MA in Ceramics.  Following my studies, I worked at an urban city farm as an illustrator.  Around this time I was mugged and held hostage by my first cat, a semi-feral ginger beauty!

My ceramic work has always been informed and inspired by the natural world, especially the flora and fauna of the British Isles.  I am interested in the relationship between human and non-human animals.  In particular how artists, craftspeople, designers and writers choose to describe and work with this subject.  I often refer to the graphic depiction of my subject found in historical textiles, stained glass, architectural carvings and printed illustrations, and draw upon the rich history of traditional stories and folktales.

All my pieces are one-off ceramic pieces fired to mid-earthenware temperatures.  My own sprig moulds are used to add surface detail.  The work is finished with oxides, sometimes slips and a glaze. These pieces are not suitable for outdoors.
