Returning to colour.
These small paintings mark the journey back to colour from almost a decade of working in charcoal.
My subject matter is still taken from the flower garden and hedgerow but now I am choosing flowers which will give me a stronger sense of colour, rather than the architectural forms favoured in the charcoal drawings.

The physicality of the brush mark and the strong blocks of neighbouring colours, are testament to the joy of returning to oil paint .

The large parrot tulip drawing was the first step away from charcoal back to colour so it is much closer in style to the most recent charcoal drawings.

I am amused by the idea of fragile living plants becoming bold and statuesque images, it is maybe an opportunity to encourage people to look more closely at the fabulous flora that is available to observe every day of the year!
