My recent works have been an exploration into feelings of hiraeth, togetherness, place and loss, through the words of familiar songs, hymns and nursery rimes of my childhood and life in rural West Wales, The National Anthem is my latest piece in this body of work. Going to school in Tregaron Ogwyn Davies has inevitably been an influence on my work, I would walk past one of his original paintings of the anthem in our school corridor countless times a day, grey formidable and heavy with texture.
I enjoy heavily embossing these familiar words into the velvety paper, the paper happily yielding to the form of the letters and words, I find it particularly pleasing the way the words become a part of the paper rather than sitting on the surface they are now its fabric and texture.
Mae hen wlad fy nhadau
Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mâd,
Tros ryddid gollasant eu gwaed.
Gwlad, Gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad,
Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r heniaith barhau.
Land of my fathers
This land of my fathers is dear to me
Land of poets and singers, and people of stature
Her brave warriors, fine patriots
Shed their blood for freedom
Land! Land! I am true to my land!
As long as the sea serves as a wall for this pure, dear land
May the language endure for ever.
