In conjunction with Studio Cennen’s exhibition 'OUT OF THE BLUES' exhibition join photographer Michèle Wright to discover the magical world of cyanotypes, the oldest form of photography.

In this four hour workshop, Michèle will explain how the power of the sun/UV light can be used to make beautiful images using a variety of materials.

We will be working together as a small group, giving space and time to gain in-depth experience and insight into this slow and magical process.

The workshop, Wednesday 25th June, will run from 10.30am until 2.30pm at the beautiful Llangathen Temperance Hall, near Aberglasney Gardens, SA32 8QD.

What you will gain from this workshop:

  • A basic grounding in the principles of composition to enable you to produce well-balanced images
  • An appreciation of the history and development of cyanotypes
  • An understanding of the relationship between the intensity of light and time and how it relates to photography using a camera
  • Practical, hands-on skills and knowledge to make your own cyanotypes, from preparing solutions and coating paper/fabrics to making and drying prints.

No photographic experience is necessary for this workshop.

Who will you learn from:

Michèle Wright is an award-winning photographer/film maker/educator with over twenty years’ experience.  She has a passion for traditional, analogue photography and taught photography and darkroom printing for many years at Carmarthen School of Art.  Michèle has worked more recently with many community groups sharing the magic and the joy of this simple but very beautiful process.

Materials: Watercolour paper and some fabric will be supplied, but it will be up to you to bring a selection of objects that prevent light to some degree, either completely or partially.  Plants and flowers are used extensively for this technique but anything goes within reason. Let your imagination run wild!  Bring a notebook if you’d like to make notes.

Warning!  Please wear old clothes; the cyanotype solution will permanently stain clothing.  Aprons and gloves will be provided.

Lunch and refreshments: Please bring along your own packed lunch. Teas/coffees and biscuits/cake will be supplied.

Location : Llangathen Temperance Hall, near Aberglasney Gardens SA32 8QD
