Simon Goss ARCA Commissioning Process

There are three ways to commission:

From your photo

One option is to work from one of your photos. These need to be of the best possible quality and the highest resolution. If you have a photo that you would like me to use, please include it in your initial email.

Over Zoom

I can arrange a sitting over Zoom where I~ can get to know the sitter a little and make screenshots to work from.

From my photo/reference sketches (my preferred method)

I can also travel to meet you and to take my own photos and make reference sketches. Meeting the sitter is helpful because I can get to know them a little better and to learn their likes/dislikes when it comes to how they would like to be portrayed. I also think the best place to take reference photos is at the sitter’s chosen environment where they would feel the most relaxed. Depending on the time, I may ask you to sit for a couple of quick sketches. These are usually 10-15 minutes each.

Please note that if I have to travel to a sitting I would ask for expenses which would be agreed beforehand.

Size and format

The size and format of the painting will be agreed before work begins on the painting. I can advise on the size, style and mood of the portrait after our sitting (unless you choose the supplied photo option).

Pricing and payment

Pricing depends on the commission option chosen, the complexity of the painting (background or furniture included etc.) and size. My prices start at £850.00 plus framing for the smallest portrait - approximately 30x40cm.

I ask for a 50%  deposit before starting the work and after we've agreed on the details of the commission. The remaining 50% is to be collected once the painting is completed and accepted - prior to any varnishing, framing or shipping. Any extra fees (shipping, framing) will also be payable at this time.

Timescale

I generally work on one portrait at a time and each takes between one and two months to complete, allowing for drying time and varnishing.

Framing

I am happy to advise on framing or to arrange to have a frame added to painting. You may can also choose to have the painting unframed for you to arrange yourself.

Delivery

My preference is for the sitter to come to my studio to see the painting and take it away with them. I can otherwise arrange delivery at cost via an insured courier service. If you would prefer me to deliver the portrait in person I can do also subject to travel expenses being covered.

Small (300x400mm) - £850

Medium (400x500mm) - £1,250

Large (500x600mm) - £1,750

Three-quarter length (500x800mm) - £2,500

All prices are unframed and do not include postage.

To include a pet or a double portrait the price

BTW I don’t usually do children.
