Acknowledging the influence of my father, who spent a lifetime working at the British Steel Corporation in Port Talbot, I grew up appreciating the importance of industry on my doorstep. Our 'bread and butter', the steelworks, not only provided an income, it was like being part of an extended family. Growing up, I remember numerous social events at the plant, for its employees and their families.

The blast furnaces and industrial structures of Port Talbot, for me, have always been significant landmarks. They continue to mark all my journeys to and from home, and are a constant reminder of the many thousands of people whose livelihoods, directly and indirectly, depended on the manufacture of steel.

The decline of the UK steel industry over time has had a detrimental impact on the town itself, however the fighting spirit and resourcefulness of this proud, tight-knit community keeps the town alive. Despite the economic challenges and deprivation, there is a warmth that doesn't seem to exist anywhere else.
