Bolmen was inspired by a poetic song lyric about a white rose that gives of itself so generously it internalises the distance it feels from the recipient of its generosity. The sculpture captures the rose in a state of decay—it is no longer white, but beginning to wilt. Its thorns, while serving as a form of defence, also point inward, signalling self-protection turned self-destructive.
Titanium—a metal associated with strength and endurance—tints the white glaze with a subtle pink, evoking flesh, vulnerability, and softness. Iron provides warm brown tones to the lower half of the piece, reflecting wilting and the fading of potential. Pyrometric cones, normally functional tools for recording kiln temperatures, are repurposed here as visual markers of self-defence and imminent decline.
Through these material and formal choices, Bolmen explores the tension between generosity and self-preservation, and how interpersonal conflict can become an internalised struggle within a form that blooms too quickly and gives too fully of itself.
