Fniss was inspired by a song that references The Epic of Gilgamesh—the oldest surviving epic poem. In the story, Gilgamesh seeks a plant that grants rejuvenation in an attempt to secure immortality for his deceased friend, only to lose it and confront the inevitability of human mortality.

The singer describes his heart leaving a lover, returning with arms full of harvest, and pleading for closeness while grappling with the fear of his own feelings and fantasising of Eden.

The sculpture embodies this tension. Its defences are activated through porcupine quills, keeping others at a distance, while simultaneously baring large parts of itself, revealing a desire for intimacy.

Strawberries reference the arms full of harvest, the fantasies of Eden, and gestures of love and offering, while the outward-pointing quills intensify the fear of emotional vulnerability. The imagery also draws on medieval depictions of hedgehogs and porcupines collecting fruit with their spines.

Stoneware body: premium crank clay.

Glaze: manganese oxide. Porcupine quills, Jesmonite, red pigment, epoxy, lacquer.
