Gerda Roper : Painter : Barry Island

My paintings are oil on linen. As a constellation, they open a conversation about a more elastic world to dream about, rather than the humdrum one daily inhabited.

They show fortune tellers, visionaries, dreamers and sleepers – some seeking knowledge of what is to come, others dreaming of a parallel universe.

Unheard music and poetry, unseen sights and wonders, unfelt loves and emotions are the territory of those involved. The sleepers and dreamers slip easily into total rest, secure in a safe place, intent on doing nothing. While others search for signs, symbols, and psychic mirrors to embrace, adjust, release or reclaim themselves.

In the paintings, the aspiration of well-being is reflected in a wealth of pattern and foliage and a richness of colour representing plenty, abundance and fecundity. A feast of wallpaper delights me, being both fixed and elusive.

Answering absolutely no expectations, and quite inconsequentially, these paintings aim to elaborate pleasure in what is seen, felt and thought about.
