This print was inspired by a tree that grows in a field near to my home. Long ago this tree probably formed part of a hedgerow but now the trunks and branches of this Hazel and Hawthorn have intertwined and melded together creating the most wonderfully twisted tree. This print was created in the spring when the Hawthorn blossom floats and twists amongst the branches of bright green hazel leaves.
Celtic tradition and beliefs perceived notable trees as an outward manifestation of the spiritual qualities of a place and twisted trees were particularly revered as sacred.
The trunk and branches of the tree have been carved and printed using a local Ash woodblock with the remainder of the blocks printed from carved lino blocks. All printing has been done by hand using a bamboo baren which is rubbed over the back of the paper to create an impression.
