Andrew’s creative and expressive career has two strands; not only was he was tutored by the Welsh/Canadian painter Gordon Stuart as a child, later studying at Swansea under Pat Briggs RCA, but he was also prestigious scholar (opera) at the Royal Academy of Music before embarking on an international opera career.

Painting and the properties of paint have been a lifelong fascination; subtle colour harmonies, light falling or altering and the formation of patterns.

Andrew is particularly interested in the way that paint can convey a mood or an atmosphere or a feeling of ‘other’, becoming a new creation within itself, just like a song.  The shifts of the seasons, the influence of the weather, forms of domestic objects, historical contexts, the many ways of achieving a myriad of results; in other words, not sticking to just one recipe in his work, but constantly evolving and evaluating yet all underpinned, as is often the case with visual minds, by daily drawing to record ‘how it is’.
