Collection: Julia Griffiths Jones : Textile Artist : Llanstephan

Julia Griffiths Jones was born in Bangor, studied Printed Textiles at Winchester School of Art and the Royal College of Art. In 1979 a British Council Scholarship enabled her to live in Bratislava for six months researching Slovak folk art and embroidery. During this time her visual language became embedded in a culture which continues to inspire her today.

Drawing has always been central to Julia’s practice and during the eighties she began making her line drawings in wire, wishing to enlarge them and see them in the air. This change of material meant learning about metal and how to weld.

In 2017 she won the gold medal for craft and design at the National Eisteddfod of Wales for her installation, Room within a Room which depicted domestic objects from Wales and Eastern Europe suspended as a layered drawing in space.

The Victoria and Albert Museum recently purchased one of these pieces which is currently on display in their Metalwork gallery.

More recently Julia has introduced enamel into her work, as a further means of exploring drawing and screen printing. Much of the work in this exhibition is dominated by the cut out – Wycinanki – a coloured paper technique originating in Poland. The coloured enamel shapes are screen printed with motifs from Hungarian embroidery – Irasos - known as written stitch.
