And curious that a tale told to three sisters on a golden afternoon should still be influencing artists, playwrights, novelists, designers and musicians some one hundred and fifty years after the telling.  But this tale became the cultural behemoth that is Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll - a publishing sensation when it was released in 1865, it was the watershed moment which allowed children’s literature to be fantastical and nonsensical and ridiculous, without needing to be educational or moralistic.

It is fitting that the second show of three inspired by favourite fiction of childhood should occur in Summer - it is, after all, the garden through the tiny door which Alice is so desperate to access that has her eating and drinking everything she is instructed to.  A garden of roses and a caterpillar on a mushroom set this underland wonderland in a contracting and expanding British Summer dreamscape - fantastical croquet mallets morphing into flamingoes and a woodland tea party set always at six o’clock teatime.
