Yoshiharu Yamashita : Potter : Cardiff

Having grown up in Japan, I have always deeply admired our culturally unique approach to craftsmanship. My pottery journey started in 2018 in Cardiff, where I currently live and work. Since then I have been learning from Yuuki Mori, a master potter based in Tokushima, whom I visit whenever I return home.

I am drawn to patterns and finishes in ceramics that reflect the natural world. In my most recent series of thrown pots each spiral is determined by the speed of the wheel, pressure applied from the inside and the thickness of the faceted walls. For me the finished result conjures nostalgic imagery from the Izu coastline where I grew up, both from the ocean itself and the rippling effect the ocean leaves behind on the sand.
