Drew Caines : Ceramic Artist : Leeds

“In my work I am always exploring what it means to be a human and how we relate to nature and the world about us. I try to make an emotional connection with my audience and I strongly believe that any work of art is only completed in the mind of the viewer. I can set the scene and give the clues but the meaning will be personal to each individual and what could be more intimate than the heart ? ... rich with associations ... literary, artistic, emotional and medical. It’s also a great form to play with visually and it’s scale makes it enjoyably tactile when you hold it in your hand.

I draw a lot of inspiration from historical art, especially really early art from the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic ages but I also mix it up with contemporary influences like Street art and Pop art to produce a blend of the ancient and modern. I don’t think people’s emotions have changed over tens of thousands of years and it’s that sense of timelessness and connection with the long line of our ancestors that I am trying to capture. Ceramics is the perfect medium for this because these hearts will literally last for hundreds and thousands of years .”
